Why are Omega 3's so important for healthy skin?

Getting regular facials and using professional skin care products prescribed to by your Licensed Esthetician is a great start to having great skin. Having a healthy diet rich in Essential Fatty Acids from oily fish, nuts and leafy green vegetables and protein, both crucial nutrients needed to help stimulate the production of healthy skin.

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids play an essential role in skin structure and appearance, as they are incorporated into cell membranes in the epidermis (the outermost layer of cells in the skin) and help to maintain the skin’s barrier function and prevent moisture loss (TEWL). Omega-3 and 6 also helps with protecting your skin from the sun and minimising collagen damage and omega-3 is also integral to the anti-ageing process.

Omega-3 fatty acids include:

  • Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)

  • Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)

  • Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)

ALA can be converted into EPA, however, this conversion does not occur in the skin. EPA is the workhorse of the omega-3 fatty acids and is incorporated into the cell membrane.

Essential fatty acids support skin health, improve nerve and vascular function, and act as antioxidants. The ERP and DHA content in Omega 3’s has strong anti-inflammatory properties and helps treat and prevent skin diseases like psoriasis, allergies and acne. Also helps to boosts immune system functioning, revitalise and rejuvenate the skin and decrease the melanin synthesis to improve and maintain proper skin tone and further help to make the skin look smooth, radiant, soft and flawless.

Whether your skin issue is wrinkles, redness, or something more serious, nourish your skin from the inside out with omega-3 fats, and your body will benefit in ways that are more than skin-deep as well.
